Departmental Safety Objectives 2026

1. Improve the Chemical Safety Management Across the Department

  1. The University Safety Office to undertake a chemical safety audit across the department to identify recommendations and actions
  2. Department to appoint a Departmental Chemical Safety Officer
  3. Establish a Departmental Sub-Committee for Chemical Safety                                          i. Work through and prioritise the identified recommendations and actions
  4. Introduce a Chemical Lab Inspection Checklist

2. To promote sensible and proportionate risk management across the Department

  1. Ensure processes and procedures are in place that facilitate completion, use, recording and review of risk assessments
  2. Define and document the risk assessment approval expectations at each level: Supervisor, Manager; LSC and Engineering Safety Office.
  3. Ensure the necessary risk assessment training requirements are identified within a departmental training matrix

3. Populate the Safety Management Hub

  1. Complete the Safety hub - Safety Hazard and Risk Register to identify top risks across the department
  2. Populate the Department Safety Arrangements section of the Safety Hub

4. Create Departmental Guidance documents

  1. Continue to identify suggested gaps for relevant  guidance documents
  2. Finalise the Safety hub - Safety Hazard and Risk Register (SHRR) to identify top risks across the department
